FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC OKO GUIDANCE, COUNSELLING AND CAREER SERVICES DIRECTORATE HOLDS WORKSHOP FOR STUDENTS ON CAREER SERVICES

In line with the Rector’s agenda of academic reinvention and programme development, the directorate of Guidance, Counselling and Career services, Federal Polytechnic Oko on Wednesday, 15th April , 2026, commenced a 3-day Intensive Training Workshop for the students of the Institution on the operations of career services for enhanced employability. The theme of the workshop is “Career Exploration” aimed at helping students explore career opportunities and guide them towards making career choices based on capabilities and interests.The workshop also featured the unveiling of the directorate website, introduction of career coaches in the departments and opening of the career service library where career books for both staff and students will be stocked.Declaring the workshop open, the Rector Federal Polytechnic Oko, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie described the programme as a continuation of the guidance and counseling units in the various secondary schools in Nigeria wherein the Guidance and Counsellor advises students on the relevant subjects for their desired courses in the tertiary institutions.She said that the unit in the Federal Polytechnic Oko opens the students minds towards self reliance after graduation and also creates awareness on how to diversify in their various areas of study.Represented by the Deputy Rector Academic, Dr. Nkiruka Akabuike, the Rector noted that the training will enable students to plan for their own economic stability without looking for white cola jobs upon graduation.While calling on the participants to put into practice what they will learn from the workshop, she also urged the director of the career services to ensure that the website is updated daily.”I wish to also advise you to take the advantage of the career library services as reading gives us information on what is obtainable in the world”In his address, the Director, Guidance, Counselling and Career Services, Nwankwo Chioma said the workshop is aimed at helping the students understand the need for career development, giving them background that will enable them source for more information which will help them secure their future.”This training is part of the efforts geared towards giving direction to our students. We discovered that most students do not know the career opportunities available to them in their course of study. Some may even graduate without discovering some of these opportunities” he said.He thanked the Rector, Dr. Chioma Awuzie, principal officers, management and facilitators for their support towards the success of the maiden edition of the students workshop on career development.According to the programme schedule, students of the School of Applied Sciences and School of Science Technology will be trained on day one while students of the School of Arts, Design and Printing Technology, School of Information Technology, School of Business Studies and School of Financial Studies will be trained on day two.Day three will have students of Schools of Engineering Technology and Environmental Design and Technology trained on career services.The Dean Students Affairs, Comrade Chibuzo Asomugha, Dr. Osita Okoye, Dr. Bridget Mbanusi, Dr. Elias Okeke, Mr. Uyaeme Obinwa and other facilitators attended the training workshop.
